Power regulator AC 220V 2kW with heatsink
The triac power controller is designed to regulate the rotational speed (revs) and ensure optimal operating modes for sewing and kitchen machines, hand-held portable tools, where an alternating current collector motor is used as an actuating element, electric heating and lighting devices, soldering iron power, asynchronous AC motors.
Suitable as a budget regulator for most power tools (grinders, drills, rotary hammers, planers, etc.). The radiator practically does not heat up at low powers up to 800-1000 watts, depending on the nature of the load. With a load of more than 1 kW, it is recommended to increase the radiator area or add forced cooling. For example, in vacuum cleaners when repairing failed "native" regulators, it would be a good decision to install the regulator so that air flows through it.
It should also be noted that the maximum output power of a device that is connected to a regulator of this kind will drop by 4-5%. This is due to the fact that the opening of the triac occurs approximately at the moment when the sinusoid is in the amplitude of 90-100 volts.
The principle of power control is to change the moment of switching on the triac after the transition of the sinusoid through zero. The more time the triac is in the open state, the more power is supplied to the load. Since the triac turns off at the moment when the current flowing through the triac becomes close to zero, then we will set the duration of the triac opening within half the period. At the beginning of the positive half-cycle, the triac is closed. As the mains voltage increases, the capacitor charges through the resistor. The charge of the capacitor continues until the voltage across it reaches the breakdown voltage of the dinistor of about 30 volts. The dinistor will close the circuit and open the triac. The triac remains open until the end of the half cycle. The variable resistor sets the charging time of the capacitor, and, accordingly, the moment of opening the dinistor and triac. This is the basis for the ability to adjust the power. During the negative half-wave, the principle of operation is similar.
